PROs and PROMs are widely used in orthopedics. With the ePRO solution by MAIA.tools können Patient Reported Outcomes for orthopedics, particularly regarding musculoskeletal disorders, can be efficiently conducted to a high degree. The highest standards are implemented, such as multi-point assessments at admission, discharge, or any follow-up time points.
For patients, we ensure low-threshold access without the need for complicated login credentials or passwords, paired with particularly simple usability to achieve high response rates. Surveys can be completed both within and outside the clinical setting. Our applications run in any web browser and work independently of specific devices or hardware requirements on the patient’s side.
For medical staff and researchers, tools for data visualization (dashboards) are available, allowing the display of scores and trends. Data exports, for instance, for quality reports or study analyses, can be pre-structured and generated at the push of a button.

Tools for orthopaedics
As a process service provider, we aim to equip our platform with exactly the tools needed in each specific facility. PROMs used in orthopedics focus on orthopedic conditions of the hip, knee, shoulder, and spine, including:
- HHS (Harris Hip Score): The HHS addresses hip function and the quality of life of patients with hip joint diseases, particularly after hip surgeries such as hip replacement implantations.
- HOOS (Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score): Similar to the HHS, the HOOS was developed with regard to hip complaints such as hip osteoarthritis and is used, among other things, to assess outcomes after hip arthroplasty surgeries.
- IKDC (International Knee Documentation Committee): The IKDC is a tool for measuring knee injuries and conditions. It takes into account aspects such as pain, mobility, functionality, and overall well-being. The IKDC is used for both preoperative and postoperative assessments.
- KOOS (Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score): A tool for measuring quality of life in knee complaints, considering both conservative and surgical treatment courses.
- Constant-Murley-Score: A tool for assessing shoulder function in shoulder disorders or after shoulder surgeries.
- ODI (Oswestry Disability Index): The ODI measures functional impairments in patients with back pain, specifically chronic lower back pain. The questionnaire includes 10 categories covering aspects such as pain intensity, lifting objects, walking, and general daily activities.
- NDI (Neck Disability Index): The NDI measures functional impairment in patients with neck pain.
- DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand): 30 Fragen, die hauptsächlich die Einschränkungen von Alltagshandlungen adressieren. Existiert auch in einer Kurzform mit nur 11 Fragen (QuickDASH)
Physical therapy
In addition, PROMs for physical therapy also play a role in rehabilitation, such as:
- PSFS (Patient-Specific Functional Scale): A flexible and patient-centered tool for measuring functional limitations in musculoskeletal disorders.
- GROC (Global Rating of Change): The GROC is a tool for assessing changes in health status. The target group includes patients with acute or chronic complaints, particularly in the musculoskeletal area.
- Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ): PROM for assessing functional impairment in back pain, particularly in the lumbar spine area.
Pain assessment
PROMs for pain assessment that are commonly used include:
- NRS (Numerical Rating Scale), SES (Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire),, VAS (Visual Analog Scale)

The ePRO solution by MAIA was developed in collaboration with the urology department of the Medical University of Graz .
Another development partnership connects MAIA ePRO with the H2O project and the Medical University of Vienna. Further information on the collaboration of MAIA and H2O can be found here: https://health-outcomes-observatory.eu/health-outcomes-observatory-austria/
